Hungarian Sour Cherry Cottage Cheese Cake (Meggyes Túrós Sütemény)


Instructions

Step 1 – Prepare the Dough

Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Rub in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add the egg and sour cream, then mix into a soft dough.

Wrap and chill for 20 minutes.


Step 2 – Make the Filling

In a large bowl, combine:

  • Cottage cheese
  • Eggs
  • Sugar
  • Vanilla
  • Lemon zest
  • Semolina
  • Sour cream

Mix until smooth.


Step 3 – Assemble

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

Roll out the dough and press it into a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking pan.

Spread the cheese filling evenly.

Arrange the sour cherries across the top.


Step 4 – Add the Crumble

Mix the flour, sugar, and butter with your fingertips until crumbly.

Sprinkle evenly over the cherries.


Step 5 – Bake

Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the filling is set.

Allow the cake to cool completely before slicing.

Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

  • Sour cherries provide the traditional Hungarian flavor, but sweet cherries can also be used.
  • Drain frozen cherries well to prevent excess moisture.
