Hungarian Sweet Bread Dumplings with Cinnamon Breadcrumbs

Instructions

Step 1 – Cook the Potatoes

Boil the potatoes until tender. Drain well, mash, and let cool completely.

Step 2 – Make the Dough

Mix the mashed potatoes with the flour, egg, butter, and salt until a soft dough forms.

Step 3 – Shape the Dumplings

Roll the dough into ropes about 2 cm (¾ inch) thick. Cut into small bite-sized pieces.

Step 4 – Boil

Bring a large pot of salted water to a gentle boil. Cook the dumplings for 3–4 minutes, or until they float to the surface. Drain well.

Step 5 – Prepare the Breadcrumbs

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the breadcrumbs and cook, stirring constantly, until golden brown. Stir in the sugar and cinnamon.

Step 6 – Coat the Dumplings

Add the cooked dumplings to the skillet and toss gently until evenly coated with the buttery cinnamon breadcrumbs.

Step 7 – Serve

Transfer to serving plates and dust generously with powdered sugar.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, add a little vanilla sugar to the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Serve warm with plum jam or applesauce.
