Hungarian Walnut Crescent Cookies (Diós Kifli)

Instructions

Step 1 – Prepare the Dough

Mix the flour and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the sour cream, egg yolk, and vanilla, then knead until a smooth dough forms. Wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Step 2 – Prepare the Filling

Combine the walnuts, sugar, vanilla, lemon zest, and warm milk. Stir until a thick, spreadable filling forms.

Step 3 – Shape the Kifli

Roll the chilled dough to about 3 mm (⅛ inch) thick. Cut into small triangles. Place a spoonful of filling on the wide end of each triangle and roll toward the tip, forming crescents.

Step 4 – Bake

Arrange on a parchment-lined baking tray and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 18–20 minutes, until lightly golden.

Step 5 – Coat with Sugar

While still warm, generously dust or roll the pastries in powdered sugar until completely coated.
