Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage (Töltött Káposzta)

Ingredients

For the Cabbage Rolls

  • 1 large head green cabbage
  • 1½ lb (700 g) ground pork
  • ½ cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 egg, optional

For the Pot

  • 1½ lb (700 g) sauerkraut
  • ½ lb (225 g) smoked sausage or smoked pork
  • 2 tbsp lard or vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp Hungarian paprika
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2–3 cups water or broth
  • Salt and pepper, as needed
